Refueling

Refueling (158 kb)
Our train, the Amtrak #3 "Southwest Chief" (Chicago - Los Angeles) was delayed because of the rushhour "Railrunner" traffic - the line is basically single track and a bottleneck. Scheduled departure was 16:45, and we had looked forward to a relaxing afternoon/evening with view of the New Mexico landscape. But it was a little after 19, when the train finally arrived, and we departed Albuquerque at 20:00. At that time it was already dark, so we didn't get to see much of New Mexico from the train. But the delay also meant that we arrived in Los Angeles at around 11 the next day, instead of 8:15 as scheduled. So instead we woke up to the Mojave Desert and Cajon Pass. And now to the train itself, it was headed by Amtrak 36 (GE P42DC) + Amtrak 11 (GE P42DC), all pictures taken on April 14, 2008, in Albuquerque.

Travelling with Amtrak....

Travelling with Amtrak, USA's passenger trains, can be a inexpensive way to travel. We (2 persons) have travelled with Amtrak 2 times. First time was in 2003 where we took a day train from San Francisco to Los Angeles for a total fare of $69.

Second time was in 2008 where we took a night train from Albuquerque to Los Angeles for at total af $261.60 including a roomette and 2 meals. And the trains are quite comfortable with a good view, especially from the doubledecker cars (Superliners).

Except some trains on the east coast trains are slow compared to Denmark and Europe. The max speed is about 100 - 120 km/h (60-75 mph) and because freight is the primary thing for the american railroads, the passenger trains often has a low priority.

The fact that the railroads are used primarily for freight means that the ride isn't that smooth - it's quite bumpy from time to time.

But besides this the comfort is fine, good seats and plenty of space and a diningcar where you can byu snacks and meals.
