Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon is very impressing. The high plain in an altitude of about 2,000 m is cut by a canyon 1,500 m deep. The Grand Canyon is/was made by erosion of the Colorado River. Because the plain is made of very thick layers of sediments it is possible to see quite "new" rock at the rim, and rock that is about 1,500,000,000 years old at the bottom.

Even though Grand Canyon lays in the desert it is not particular hot at the rim - this is because of the height. Actually the North Rim is not open before May because of snow. But as you go down in the canyon, the temperature rises, and at the bottom the climate is totally different from the climate at the rim.

Standing at the rim is a fantastic feeling - the view is spectacular and on a clear day it is possible to see San Francisco Peaks more than 100 km away. The rim on the other side seems to be 2-3 km away, but in fact it is 10-15 km away. And if you are going to see the Grand Canyon, don't miss sunrise or sunset - the colors change gradually and you can see the long shadows down in the canyon.
