The Everglades National Park lies in southwestern Florida, west of Miami. The Everglades is in fact a river system; the water from Lake Okeechobee runs through the Everglades on its way to the Golf of Mexico. Compared to other rivers, the Everglades is very shallow and very wide (30-50 km). This means the water moves very slowly. Alligator

The Everglades is rich in animal life, we saw a lot of birds, alligators and turtles. Often you have to look carefully, at first there is nothing but suddenly you can see perhaps 8-10 alligators almost hidden in the water. Great White Heron

Mahogany Hammock

Many places in Everglades National Park the ground is just a little bit higher than the surrounding terrain. This means trees can grow - it is often referred to as islands of trees in the river of grass. Mahogany Hammock is such an "island" with different species of hardwood.
