I have made a tracker for my homepage, so I can see the number of visits and which pages are the most popular. My tracker, made in php, logs:

  • time
  • ip-adress / hostname
  • the pages shown
  • browser version and operating system
  • screen resolution
  • previous page (referrer)
All is logged in logfiles and then imported to a database.

The purpuse of logging the visits is to improve my homepage. There is more sense in updating and improving pages, that are often visited, than in updating and improving pages, that are seldom (or never!) visited.

How many visitors?

Below is a chart showing number of visitors/month (I count an unique visitor as an unique IP-adress - not completely correct but I think it gives a reasonable indication):

Number of visitors

The number of visitors have grown from 2002 to 2005, have been more or less steady at 15.000 visitors/month until 2007. From 2007 the number of visitors have dropped to about 1/5. Even though my primary reason for making my homepage is to show some of my interests, I of course like many visitors, so the dropping number of visitors is a little sad for me. I'm do not know the reason why the number of visitors have dropped so significantly, but of course a less popular site will have a lower rank on Google, which has becomed a kind of de facto standard.
