Introduction:

We find Berlin is a great city to visit - and had read that Hamburg in many ways has the same things that make Berlin such a nice place to visit. So we made a 4 day trip to Hamburg in April 2010. The primary target was normal vacation, but I also had some time to watch trains.

For a more detailed description of this rail hot spot, watch my German Rail Hot Spot page.

April 19, 2010 I spend the morning at Hamburg-Harburg, a very busy rail hot spot. The weather was nice with a blue sky. I placed myself at the southern end of the track 5/6 platform. Here I met an english couple also railfanning - so while we waited we talked and shared information about railfanning.

Traffic was the usual variated mix of mostly DB Schenker freights, but also freights hauled by EVB, OHE and others. Passenger trains were Metronom regional trains and DB ICE and locohauled trains.

A nice welcome was DB 103 222 with a test train.

In the evening I went to Hamburg Altona. Here I saw one of Nord-Ostsee-Bahns DE 2700 locomotives, originally built for Norway, but returned to Siemens due to too many problems. Now they work for Nord-Ostsee-Bahn.

Other specialities was ÖBBs 1016 026.

April 20, 2010 Like the day before, I started at Hamburg-Harburg at around 10:00. The weather was cloudy, and traffic was not as busy as the day before. A highlight was EVBs 622 01 "Ludmilla".

Because traffic was a little low, I decided to explore Wilhelmsburg, a place north of Hamburg-Harburg. I spent perhaps ˝ hour here, but as it had started to rain, I soon decided to go back to Hamburg and do a little shopping and sightseeing.

Mid afternoon the rain stopped, so I headed back to Hamburg-Harburg, hoping for some action. And things were now busy, with a lot of trains, including both DB Schenker Rail Scandinavia 185 and DB Schenker Denmark EG.

As I wanted to explore other photo locations, I took a Metronom train to Meckelfeld, the station just north of the big Maschen Yard. Meckelfeld is just a few minutes train ride from Hamburg-Harburg, but because Meckelfeld is served by only 1 train pr. hour in each direction, I only stayed about 15 minutes - otherwise I would have to stay another hour. But I managed to catch a few trains.

Then back to Hamburg-Harburg, and after I little while I continued north to Wilhelmsburg to catch trains from the bridge in the beautiful evening sunlight. And as the sun set, my railfanning on this trip ended.
