Introduction: A 5 day trip to Leipzig, mostly ordinary vacation, but also with some railfanning i Leipzig and Großkorbetha.

This was my first time in the former East Germany (exept Berlin) - and I noticed a significant differenct in traction used and types of traffic compared to places like Hamburg and along the Rhine. Around Leipzig and Großkorbetha tank car trains has a large share of the traffic, while container and intermodal traffic is relatively low. And even though many freights are hauled by modern locomotives like BR 145, BR 152 and BR 185, ex-East German locomotives like "Ludmillas" and especially BR 155 are still often seen.

You can see a more detailed description of the two Rail Hot Spots Leipzig-Thekla and Großkorbetha.
