Since my trip to Norway in 1997 by bike I have bought a car, a Fiat Tipo. This time I planned to go to Nordkapp, so I choosed to go by car, as I don't have 2 months to spend on a tour on bike. And actually, Nordkapp turned out to be "to far" away even by car.

Even though a part of my trip went trough Sweden, I have choosen to place this description under "Norway" because Norway was the primary target for my trip.

August 6 - August 10, 2000: København - Southern Norway - Northern Sweden

I started on a sunny sunday with beautiful weather. My destination the first day was southern Norway, where some of my family lives - the distance is perfect for one day's driving. After a day without driving I continued north. I went up through Østfold (a county on the east side of the Oslo fiord), Oslo (just driving through), up through the Gudbrandsdal valley and east through Trysil. In the evening I reached Idre in Sweden. A few kilometers east of Idre I parked the car in a forrest and sleeped in "Hotel Tipo".
The next morning I continued north. There's quite a lot of cosy small cafe's in Sweden, where you can get coffee and waffles - so I stopped quite often! It is very relaxing to spend half an hour with coffee, waffles and a good book. Road work

Road work was quite normal in Sweden - here somewhere in the middle of Sweden.
I followed route 45 through Östersund, Vilhelmina and Storuman to Arvidsjaur. Because the camp-site in Arvidsjaur was closed for the night, when I arrived, I decided to spend the night in my car (I actually sleep quite well in a Tipo).

Nordkapp is VERY far away. From Arvidsjaur there's 2 days of driving, so the next morning i decided not to go to Nordkapp and instead drive via Kiruna to Narvik. This saved 4 days of driving and a lot of gas!

I spend some hours in Arvidsjaur shopping and then continued north through Jokkmokk and Gällivare. At 9 in the evening I reached Kiruna - and unfortunately the last bed in the Youth Hostel was sold 2 minuttes before I arrived, so I had to spend the night at Järnvägshotellet - the Railway Hotel. The Polar Cirkle

South of Jokkmokk is the Polar Cirkle - and of course there is a Polar Cirkle Center, where you can get a certificate that you have crossed the Polar Cirkle. Instead of that, I had a photo taken of me and the Polar Cirkle sign. (44 kb)
  Reindeer

Reindeers are quite common in Sweden and Norway - here's one in Northern Sweden. (104 kb)
